Problem

Let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be a bounded open set with Lipschitz boundary. Let ψ ⁣:Ω‾→ℝ\psi \colon \overline{\Omega} \to \R be a continuous function in the Sobolev space H1(Ω)H^1(\Omega) with ψ≤0\psi \le 0 on ∂Ω\partial \Omega, the obstacle. Let K={v∈H01(Ω):v≥ψ almost everywhere in Ω}.K = \set{v \in H^1_0(\Omega) : v \ge \psi \text{ almost everywhere in } \Omega}. Find u∈Ku \in K that minimizes the Dirichlet energy D(v)=12∫Ω∣∇v∣2 dxD(v) = \frac{1}{2} \int_\Omega \abs{\nabla v}^2 \, dx over all v∈Kv \in K.

Remarks

The set KK is nonempty, closed and convex in H01(Ω)H^1_0(\Omega), since it contains max⁡(ψ,0)\max(\psi, 0). So the problem has exactly one solution, by the Stampacchia theorem for variational inequalities and the Poincaré inequality. Equivalently, u∈Ku \in K satisfies ∫Ω∇u⋅∇(v−u) dx≥0\int_\Omega \nabla u \cdot \nabla (v - u) \, dx \ge 0 for all v∈Kv \in K. When uu is regular enough, this is the complementarity system u≥ψu \ge \psi, Δu≤0\Delta u \le 0, and Δu=0\Delta u = 0 where u>ψu > \psi. So uu is harmonic in the open set {u>ψ}\set{u > \psi} and equals ψ\psi on the contact set {u=ψ}\set{u = \psi}. The boundary of the contact set inside Ω\Omega is not known in advance, so this is a free boundary problem. If ψ\psi is smooth, the solution has bounded second derivatives locally, and this is the best regularity possible in general, since Δu\Delta u jumps across the free boundary. In dimension one with Ω=(−1,1)\Omega = (-1, 1), the solution is the smallest concave function above ψ\psi that vanishes at ±1\pm 1: it is linear off the contact set.
