Definition

Let MM be a compact Riemannian manifold and let f ⁣:M→Mf \colon M \to M be a C1+αC^{1+\alpha} diffeomorphism for some α>0\alpha > 0. Let μ\mu be an ff-invariant Borel probability measure on MM. Let x∈Mx \in M and let v∈TxMv \in T_x M be nonzero. The Lyapunov exponent of vv is λ(x,v)=lim⁡n→∞1nlog⁡∥Dfxn v∥\lambda(x, v) = \lim_{n \to \infty} \frac{1}{n} \log \norm{D f^n_x \, v} when the limit exists. By the Oseledets theorem, for μ\mu-almost every xx the limit exists for every vv and takes finitely many values. The measure μ\mu is hyperbolic if, for μ\mu-almost every xx, the number 00 is not among the values λ(x,v)\lambda(x, v). Pesin theory is the theory of the pairs (f,μ)(f, \mu) of this kind with μ\mu hyperbolic, also called nonuniformly hyperbolic systems.

Remarks

Example: let ff be the linear map of the torus ℝ2/ℤ2\R^2 / \Z^2 given by the matrix (2111)\begin{pmatrix} 2 & 1 \\ 1 & 1 \end{pmatrix}, and let μ\mu be Lebesgue measure. The exponents are log⁡3+52>0\log \frac{3 + \sqrt 5}{2} > 0 and log⁡3−52<0\log \frac{3 - \sqrt 5}{2} < 0 at every point, so μ\mu is hyperbolic.

Non-example: an irrational rotation of the torus ℝ2/ℤ2\R^2/\Z^2 with Lebesgue measure is an isometry, so both exponents are 00 everywhere and the measure is not hyperbolic.

The main results of the theory, for hyperbolic μ\mu and C1+αC^{1+\alpha} maps, include the following. Local stable and unstable manifolds exist at μ\mu-almost every point. If μ\mu is absolutely continuous with respect to volume, the entropy of μ\mu equals the integral of the sum of the positive exponents, counted with multiplicity (the Pesin entropy formula). The hypothesis α>0\alpha > 0 is needed for the stable manifold theorem: the theory does not extend in general to C1C^1 maps.
