Birkhoff sum and average
Summary
The Birkhoff sum of a function along an orbit adds up its values at the first points of the orbit. The Birkhoff average divides this sum by . The average is the time average of an observable: the mean value seen by watching the system for steps. The ergodic theorems of Birkhoff and von Neumann say when these averages converge and identify the limit. For an ergodic transformation and an integrable function, the limit is the space average of the function for almost every starting point. Birkhoff sums also appear in the definitions of Lyapunov exponents, cocycles and the thermodynamic formalism.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
