Definition

Let XX be a set, let T ⁣:X→XT \colon X \to X be a map with iterates TkT^k, and let f ⁣:X→ℝf \colon X \to \R be a function. For an integer n≥1n \ge 1, the Birkhoff sum of ff is the function Snf(x)=∑k=0n−1f(Tk(x)),x∈X,S_n f(x) = \sum_{k=0}^{n-1} f(T^k(x)), \qquad x \in X, and the Birkhoff average, or ergodic average, of ff is Anf(x)=1nSnf(x).A_n f(x) = \frac{1}{n} S_n f(x).

Remarks

The same formulas make sense for ff with values in ℂ\C or in any real vector space. The sums satisfy the cocycle relation Sm+nf=Smf+(Snf)∘TmS_{m+n} f = S_m f + (S_n f) \circ T^m for all m,n≥1m, n \ge 1. If μ\mu is a TT-invariant probability measure and ff is integrable, then ∫Anf dμ=∫f dμ\int A_n f \, d\mu = \int f \, d\mu for every nn.

Example: let T(x)=x+1/2 mod 1T(x) = x + 1/2 \bmod 1 on [0,1)[0, 1) and f(x)=xf(x) = x. For x∈[0,1/2)x \in [0, 1/2) the orbit alternates between xx and x+1/2x + 1/2, so S2mf(x)=m(2x+1/2)S_{2m} f(x) = m(2x + 1/2) and A2mf(x)=x+1/4A_{2m} f(x) = x + 1/4.

Non-example: the space average ∫01f(x) dx=1/2\int_0^1 f(x) \, dx = 1/2 is not a Birkhoff average, since it does not depend on a starting point; in this example A2mf(x)=x+1/4A_{2m} f(x) = x + 1/4 differs from 1/21/2 unless x=1/4x = 1/4.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
