Statement
Let be a probability space and let be a measure-preserving transformation. Let be integrable functions that are subadditive along : Let , an element of . Then:
- converges almost everywhere to a function with almost everywhere;
- , and if , then in ;
- if is ergodic, then almost everywhere.
Remarks
If for an integrable , then equality holds in the subadditivity condition, and the theorem reduces to Birkhoff's ergodic theorem. The integrals form a subadditive sequence, , so by Fekete's lemma; the theorem is the pointwise version of this fact. In the proof, the function is shown to be invariant. A covering argument cuts a long orbit segment into blocks on which is close to this . Subadditivity then bounds by the sum over the blocks.
Example: let be measurable with and integrable, and let . Submultiplicativity of the operator norm gives , and the two integrability conditions make each integrable. For ergodic , the theorem gives the almost sure limit of , the top Lyapunov exponent of the matrix cocycle; this is the Furstenberg–Kesten theorem.
Going deeper
For a student
Kingman proved the theorem in 1968. It extends Birkhoff's theorem from additive to subadditive sequences. It is the main tool for the existence of Lyapunov exponents, as in the Furstenberg–Kesten theorem and in the proof of the Oseledets multiplicative ergodic theorem. Another standard use is the time constant of first-passage percolation, where travel times between points are subadditive but not additive.
