Infimum

Builds on Set bounded above

Definition

Let (P,≤)(P, \le) be a partially ordered set and let SS be a subset of PP. An element aa of PP is an infimum, or greatest lower bound, of SS when these two conditions hold:

  1. aa is a lower bound of SS;
  2. if mm is a lower bound of SS, then m≤am \le a.

The notation is a=inf⁡Sa = \inf S.

Remarks

A set has at most one infimum. In ℝ\mathbb{R}, inf⁡{1/n:n≥1}=0\inf \{1/n : n \ge 1\} = 0, and 00 is not an element of this set. For a subset SS of ℝ\mathbb{R}, inf⁡S=−sup⁡(−S)\inf S = -\sup(-S) when one side exists, where −S={−s:s∈S}-S = \{-s : s \in S\}.

Reading path

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 2 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Show the path as a graph
Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
