Definition
Let be a normed vector space, let be nonempty, and let . The error of best approximation of from is the infimum In particular, for a continuous with the supremum norm and the set of real polynomial functions of degree at most ,
Remarks
Example: for on one has . The line gives on , and no line does better, because the error of takes the values at .
Non-example: the error of a particular approximation is in general larger. The line has error , which is not .
if and only if lies in the closure of . The infimum equals when is a best approximation. Since , the sequence is nonincreasing.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
