Chebyshev constant
Definition
Let be a compact set in with at least one point. For a polynomial , let . For an integer , let The Chebyshev constant of is .
Remarks
The infimum is attained, and a monic polynomial of degree with is a Chebyshev polynomial of . Since a product of monic polynomials is monic, . So the sequence is subadditive, and Fekete's lemma shows that the limit exists and equals .
Example: let be the unit circle. For a monic , Parseval's identity gives . So , with equality for , and and .
Non-example: the polynomial has maximum on the unit circle, but it is not monic, so it does not enter the infimum. Without the monic condition the infimum would be .
If is a finite set with points, then vanishes on , so for and .
