Liouville's equation

Builds on Semilinear PDELaplacianGaussian curvature

Definition

Let Ω⊆ℝ2\Omega \subseteq \R^2 be an open set and let K∈ℝK \in \R be a constant. Liouville's equation on Ω\Omega is the semilinear equation Δu+Ke2u=0\Delta u + K e^{2u} = 0 for a twice continuously differentiable function u ⁣:Ω→ℝu \colon \Omega \to \R, where Δ=∂x2+∂y2\Delta = \partial_x^2 + \partial_y^2 is the Laplacian.

Remarks

The metric e2u(dx2+dy2)e^{2u}(dx^2 + dy^2) has Gaussian curvature −e−2uΔu-e^{-2u} \Delta u, so uu solves the equation exactly when this metric has constant curvature KK. Example: for K=1K = 1, u(x,y)=log⁡2−log⁡(1+r2)u(x, y) = \log 2 - \log(1 + r^2) with r2=x2+y2r^2 = x^2 + y^2 is a solution on ℝ2\R^2. Indeed, Δlog⁡(1+r2)=4/(1+r2)2\Delta \log(1 + r^2) = 4/(1 + r^2)^2, so Δu=−4/(1+r2)2=−e2u\Delta u = -4/(1 + r^2)^2 = -e^{2u}. Non-example: for K=1K = 1, the function u=0u = 0 is not a solution, since Δu+e2u=1\Delta u + e^{2u} = 1. Other normalizations are common: the substitution u=v/2u = v/2 gives Δv+2Kev=0\Delta v + 2K e^{v} = 0, so the form Δv+λev=0\Delta v + \lambda e^{v} = 0 is equivalent. Locally, the solutions for K>0K > 0 are u=log⁡(2∣f′∣/(1+K∣f∣2))u = \log\big( 2 \abs{f'} / (1 + K \abs{f}^2) \big) with ff a holomorphic function of z=x+iyz = x + iy whose derivative has no zeros.
