Builds on Partial differential equationGradient

Definition

Let n≥1n \ge 1 and let b∈ℝnb \in \R^n be a fixed vector. The transport equation with velocity bb is the partial differential equation ∂tu+b⋅∇u=0\partial_t u + b \cdot \nabla u = 0 for u ⁣:ℝn×(0,∞)→ℝu \colon \R^n \times (0, \infty) \to \R. Here ∇u\nabla u is the gradient of uu in the space variable xx. The initial value problem adds the condition u(x,0)=g(x)u(x, 0) = g(x) for a given function g ⁣:ℝn→ℝg \colon \R^n \to \R.

Remarks

For g∈C1(ℝn)g \in C^1(\R^n) the initial value problem has the unique C1C^1 solution u(x,t)=g(x−tb)u(x, t) = g(x - tb). The reason is that uu is constant along each line s↦(x+sb,t+s)s \mapsto (x + sb, t + s), since the derivative of uu along it is ∂tu+b⋅∇u=0\partial_t u + b \cdot \nabla u = 0. The inhomogeneous equation ∂tu+b⋅∇u=f\partial_t u + b \cdot \nabla u = f has the solution u(x,t)=g(x−tb)+∫0tf(x+(s−t)b,s) dsu(x, t) = g(x - tb) + \int_0^t f(x + (s - t) b, s)\, ds. With a variable velocity field b(x,t)b(x, t) one also calls ∂tu+b⋅∇u=0\partial_t u + b \cdot \nabla u = 0 a transport equation, and ∂tu+∇⋅(u b)=0\partial_t u + \nabla \cdot (u\, b) = 0 the continuity equation; the two agree when ∇⋅b=0\nabla \cdot b = 0.

Example: n=1n = 1, b=2b = 2, g(x)=e−x2g(x) = e^{-x^2}, and u(x,t)=e−(x−2t)2u(x, t) = e^{-(x - 2t)^2}. Check: ∂tu=4(x−2t)u\partial_t u = 4(x - 2t) u and ∂xu=−2(x−2t)u\partial_x u = -2(x - 2t) u, so ∂tu+2∂xu=0\partial_t u + 2 \partial_x u = 0, and u(x,0)=g(x)u(x, 0) = g(x).

Non-example: u(x,t)=e−tsin⁡xu(x, t) = e^{-t} \sin x with n=1n = 1 is not a solution for any bb. Indeed ∂tu+b ∂xu=e−t(−sin⁡x+bcos⁡x)\partial_t u + b\, \partial_x u = e^{-t}(-\sin x + b \cos x), which is not identically zero.
