Statement

Let n≥2n \ge 2 and write points of ℝn\R^n as x=(x′,xn)x = (x', x_n) with x′∈ℝn−1x' \in \R^{n-1} and xn∈ℝx_n \in \R. Let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be an open set that is symmetric in the hyperplane xn=0x_n = 0: if (x′,xn)∈Ω(x', x_n) \in \Omega, then (x′,−xn)∈Ω(x', -x_n) \in \Omega. Let Ω+={x∈Ω:xn>0}\Omega^+ = \set{x \in \Omega : x_n > 0} and σ={x∈Ω:xn=0}\sigma = \set{x \in \Omega : x_n = 0}. Let uu be a continuous function on Ω+∪σ\Omega^+ \cup \sigma that is harmonic on Ω+\Omega^+ and equal to 00 on σ\sigma. Define U(x′,xn)=u(x′,xn)U(x', x_n) = u(x', x_n) for xn≥0x_n \ge 0 and U(x′,xn)=−u(x′,−xn)U(x', x_n) = -u(x', -x_n) for xn<0x_n < 0. Then UU is harmonic on Ω\Omega.

Remarks

Proof idea: UU is continuous on Ω\Omega and harmonic off σ\sigma, so only points of σ\sigma need care. Take a closed ball centred at a point of σ\sigma inside Ω\Omega, and let vv be the Poisson integral of UU over its boundary sphere. The boundary data are odd in xnx_n, so vv is odd in xnx_n and vanishes on the hyperplane. On each half ball, U−vU - v is harmonic and has boundary values 00, so U=vU = v by the maximum principle. Example: u(x)=xnu(x) = x_n on the upper half-space vanishes on xn=0x_n = 0, and its reflection is U(x)=xnU(x) = x_n on all of ℝn\R^n, which is harmonic. The hypothesis u=0u = 0 on σ\sigma is needed: for u≡1u \equiv 1 the odd reflection jumps from 11 to −1-1 across the hyperplane and is not continuous. For the plane, this principle and the Schwarz reflection principle for holomorphic functions imply each other through harmonic conjugates.

Going deeper

For a student

The reflection principle is a tool to extend harmonic functions across flat pieces of the boundary. It shows, for example, that a harmonic function on a half-ball that vanishes on the flat part is real analytic up to that flat part. Combined with the Kelvin transform, the same idea works for reflection in a sphere. The method of images for half-spaces rests on the same odd reflection.
