Definition

Let n≥2n \ge 2 and let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be a domain. Let hh be a positive harmonic function on Ω\Omega. The function hh is minimal if every harmonic function vv on Ω\Omega with 0≤v≤h0 \le v \le h equals chc h for a constant c∈[0,1]c \in [0, 1].

Remarks

Some authors also normalise h(x0)=1h(x_0) = 1 at a fixed reference point x0x_0. Example: on the unit disc 𝔻\mathbb{D}, let h(z)=1−∣z∣2∣1−z∣2h(z) = \frac{1 - \abs{z}^2}{\abs{1 - z}^2}, the Poisson kernel with pole 11. If 0≤v≤h0 \le v \le h is harmonic, the Herglotz representation theorem writes vv and h−vh - v as Poisson integrals of positive measures μ\mu and ν\nu with μ+ν=δ1\mu + \nu = \delta_1, the measure of hh. Then μ\mu is a multiple of δ1\delta_1, so vv is a multiple of hh, and hh is minimal. Non-example: h=1h = 1 on the unit disc is not minimal. The function v(z)=1+Re⁡z2v(z) = \frac{1 + \operatorname{Re} z}{2} is harmonic with 0≤v≤10 \le v \le 1 on 𝔻\mathbb{D}, but it is not constant. On ℝn\R^n every positive harmonic function is constant, so h=1h = 1 is minimal there. The minimal functions with h(x0)=1h(x_0) = 1 are the extreme points of the convex set of positive harmonic functions with value 11 at x0x_0.
