Definition

Let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be an open set and let 1<p<∞1 < p < \infty. Let uu lie in the local Sobolev space Wloc1,p(Ω)W^{1,p}_{\mathrm{loc}}(\Omega). It is a weak solution of the p-Laplace equation div⁡(∣∇u∣p−2∇u)=0\operatorname{div}(\abs{\nabla u}^{p-2} \nabla u) = 0 in Ω\Omega if ∫Ω∣∇u∣p−2 ∇u⋅∇φ dx=0for every φ∈Cc∞(Ω),\int_\Omega \abs{\nabla u}^{p-2}\, \nabla u \cdot \nabla \varphi \, dx = 0 \quad \text{for every } \varphi \in C_c^\infty(\Omega), where ∇u\nabla u is the weak gradient. A pp-harmonic function in Ω\Omega is a continuous weak solution of this equation.

Remarks

Every weak solution agrees almost everywhere with a continuous one, which is even of class Cloc1,αC^{1,\alpha}_{\mathrm{loc}} for some α>0\alpha > 0, so the continuity requirement only picks a representative. For p=2p = 2 the condition is ∫∇u⋅∇φ=0\int \nabla u \cdot \nabla \varphi = 0, and by Weyl's lemma the 22-harmonic functions are the classical harmonic functions. Example: for p≠np \ne n, the function u(x)=∣x∣(p−n)/(p−1)u(x) = \abs{x}^{(p - n)/(p - 1)} is pp-harmonic in ℝn∖{0}\R^n \setminus \set{0}. Indeed, for a radial function u(r)u(r) the equation reads (rn−1∣u′∣p−2u′)′=0\big(r^{n-1} \abs{u'}^{p-2} u'\big)' = 0, and here ∣u′∣p−2u′\abs{u'}^{p-2} u' is a constant multiple of r1−nr^{1-n}. For p=np = n the function log⁡∣x∣\log \abs{x} plays the same role. Non-example: u(x)=x12u(x) = x_1^2 on ℝn\R^n is not pp-harmonic. Here ∣∇u∣p−2∇u=2p−1∣x1∣p−2x1 e1\abs{\nabla u}^{p-2} \nabla u = 2^{p-1} \abs{x_1}^{p-2} x_1\, e_1, whose divergence 2p−1(p−1)∣x1∣p−22^{p-1}(p - 1)\abs{x_1}^{p-2} is positive for x1≠0x_1 \ne 0. Equivalently, uu is pp-harmonic in Ω\Omega when it is continuous and minimizes ∫D∣∇v∣p dx\int_D \abs{\nabla v}^p \, dx among all vv with v−u∈W01,p(D)v - u \in W^{1,p}_0(D), for every open DD with compact closure in Ω\Omega.
