Definition
Let and let be an open subset of , with points written , , . A caloric function on is a function such that:
- is twice continuously differentiable in and once continuously differentiable in on .
- satisfies the heat equation where is the Laplacian in the space variables.
Remarks
Example: on , the function is caloric, since and . On , the heat kernel is caloric.
Non-example: on is smooth but not caloric, because while .
Some authors write the heat equation as with a constant ; a change of the time scale reduces this to . A function with is called subcaloric, and one with is called supercaloric. Caloric functions are also called temperatures.
