Hamilton–Jacobi equation
Builds on Partial differential equationGradient
Definition
Let and let be a continuous function, called the Hamiltonian. Let . The Hamilton–Jacobi equation with Hamiltonian is the partial differential equation for . Here is the gradient of in . The stationary Hamilton–Jacobi equation is for defined on an open subset of .
Remarks
Often does not depend on , and the equation reads , usually with an initial condition . In mechanics the Hamiltonian also depends on time, and the equation is for Hamilton's principal function . The Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman equation of optimal control is a Hamilton–Jacobi equation whose Hamiltonian is an infimum or a supremum over controls.
Example: and for . Check: and , so and the sum is .
Non-example: the heat equation is not a Hamilton–Jacobi equation, since it involves second derivatives of . Adding a term to a Hamilton–Jacobi equation gives a viscous approximation, whose limits as lead to viscosity solutions.
