Definition
Let be open and let be smooth. Consider the reduced wave equation at a high frequency . The geometric optics ansatz is a formal series with a real phase and amplitudes . Inserting it into the equation and setting the coefficient of each power of to zero gives:
- the eikonal equation , from the power ;
- the transport equation , from the power ;
- the transport equations for .
Geometric optics is the approximation of by such a series, with and the solving these equations. The rays are the integral curves of the gradient .
Remarks
Example: with , the phase with a unit vector satisfies the eikonal equation, and , for satisfy the transport equations. The series reduces to the exact solution , a plane wave whose rays are straight lines in the direction . Non-example: with and fails clause 1, since . The eikonal equation usually has smooth solutions only locally; where rays cross, at caustics, the approximation breaks down and other ansätze are needed. The same procedure applies to time-dependent hyperbolic equations, with phases .
