Positive harmonic function

Builds on Harmonic functionOpen set

Definition

Let n≥2n \ge 2 and let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be an open set. A positive harmonic function on Ω\Omega is a harmonic function u ⁣:Ω→ℝu \colon \Omega \to \R such that u(x)>0u(x) > 0 for every x∈Ωx \in \Omega.

Remarks

Example: on the upper half-plane {(x,y):y>0}\set{(x, y) : y > 0}, the function u(x,y)=yu(x, y) = y is positive harmonic, since Δu=0\Delta u = 0 and y>0y > 0 there. Non-example: u(x,y)=xu(x, y) = x on the same half-plane is harmonic but takes negative values, for instance at (−1,1)(-1, 1). Some authors call a harmonic function with u≥0u \ge 0 nonnegative harmonic; on a connected open set, the minimum principle shows that such a function is either identically 00 or positive everywhere. On a ball, positive harmonic functions satisfy Harnack's inequality.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
