Definition
Let and , and let . For on the circle and with , the Herglotz–Riesz kernel of is
Remarks
For fixed , the function is holomorphic on . Its real part is the Poisson kernel: with and , because is purely imaginary. Example: for the unit disc (, ), and , one gets , and the Poisson kernel is also . Non-example: the Cauchy kernel is also holomorphic in , but at , it equals , so its real part is not the Poisson kernel. For the two kernels are related by . If is harmonic on a neighbourhood of , the Schwarz integral formula reads where is the harmonic conjugate of on with . The same kernel appears in the Herglotz representation theorem. Other names in use are Herglotz kernel and Schwarz kernel.
