Partial differential equations Definition
Minimal surface equation
Definition
Let and let be an open set. Consider a twice continuously differentiable function . The minimal surface equation on is the quasilinear equation Here is the gradient and is the divergence.
Remarks
Expanding the divergence gives the equivalent form For this is . A function solves it exactly when the mean curvature of its graph in is zero, that is, when the graph is a minimal surface. Example: Scherk's function on the square is a solution. Here , , , and , so the left side is . Non-example: is not a solution, since at the origin and the left side equals .
