Problem

Let n≥2n \ge 2 and let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be a bounded connected open set whose boundary ∂Ω\partial\Omega is a C1C^1 hypersurface, with outward unit normal ν\nu. Let g ⁣:∂Ω→ℝg \colon \partial\Omega \to \R be a continuous function. Find a function uu that is twice continuously differentiable on Ω\Omega, continuously differentiable on Ω‾\overline{\Omega}, harmonic on Ω\Omega, and satisfies the Neumann boundary condition ∂u∂ν=gon ∂Ω.\frac{\partial u}{\partial \nu} = g \quad \text{on } \partial\Omega.

Remarks

A necessary condition is ∫∂Ωg dS=0\int_{\partial\Omega} g \, dS = 0: by the divergence theorem, ∫∂Ω∂u/∂ν dS=∫ΩΔu dx=0\int_{\partial\Omega} \partial u / \partial \nu \, dS = \int_\Omega \Delta u \, dx = 0. A solution is unique up to an additive constant: the difference ww of two solutions satisfies ∫Ω∣∇w∣2 dx=∫∂Ωw ∂w/∂ν dS=0\int_\Omega \abs{\nabla w}^2 \, dx = \int_{\partial\Omega} w \, \partial w / \partial \nu \, dS = 0, so ww is constant on the connected set Ω\Omega. For bounded domains with sufficiently smooth boundary, for example C2C^2, a solution exists whenever the condition ∫∂Ωg dS=0\int_{\partial\Omega} g \, dS = 0 holds; one proof uses layer potentials and Fredholm theory. Example: on the unit disc with g(θ)=cos⁡θg(\theta) = \cos\theta, the condition holds and u(x,y)=xu(x, y) = x is a solution, since ∂u/∂ν=x=cos⁡θ\partial u / \partial \nu = x = \cos\theta on the unit circle. The problem is the companion of the Dirichlet problem, which prescribes uu instead of its normal derivative.

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
