Definition
Let and let be an open set. For and , let be the open ball and the sphere of centre and radius . Let be the surface measure on normalised to total mass . A function is superharmonic if:
- is lower semicontinuous.
- is not identically on any connected component of .
- For every and with ,
Remarks
A function is superharmonic if and only if is subharmonic and not identically on any component. It suffices to require clause 3 for all small enough at each point. A function of class is superharmonic if and only if its Laplacian satisfies . A function is harmonic if and only if it is both superharmonic and subharmonic.
Example: for let on , with . It is lower semicontinuous and finite off . Its mean over equals , which is at most , and at the value dominates. So is superharmonic. In the plane, is superharmonic in the same way.
Non-example: is continuous on , but its mean over is , so clause 3 fails.
