Gradient flow on a manifold
Builds on Riemannian manifoldSmooth functionGradientFlow of a vector field
Definition
Let be a Riemannian manifold and let be a smooth function. The gradient of is the vector field on with for every tangent vector . The (negative) gradient flow of is the flow of . So it is the solution of defined on its maximal domain.
Remarks
Along a flow line, , with equality exactly at critical points of . So is a Lyapunov function for the flow, and the rest points of the flow are the critical points of . If is compact, the flow is defined for all .
Example: on with the Euclidean metric, let . Then and . The origin is the only rest point, and the flow has the familiar saddle picture.
Non-example: on , the rotation field is not for any smooth . Its flow has closed orbits, but would strictly decrease along a nonconstant flow line of a gradient flow, so it could not return to its starting point.
The flow depends on the metric , not only on . A vector field with away from the critical points, and of a standard form near them, is called gradient-like for . Such fields serve the same purposes in Morse theory. For a Morse function and a generic metric, the gradient flow is a Morse–Smale system.
