Definition

Let Ω⊂ℝn\Omega \subset \R^n be a bounded open set with smooth boundary Γ=∂Ω\Gamma = \partial\Omega and outward unit normal ν\nu. Let PP be an elliptic linear differential operator of order 2m2m with smooth coefficients on a neighbourhood UU of Ω‾\overline{\Omega}. Assume PP has a fundamental solution EE on UU, that is, PE=δP E = \delta in the sense of distributions. For uu smooth up to Γ\Gamma, let γu=(u∣Γ,∂νu∣Γ,…,∂ν2m−1u∣Γ)\gamma u = (u|_\Gamma, \partial_\nu u|_\Gamma, \ldots, \partial_\nu^{2m-1} u|_\Gamma) be its Cauchy data, given by the trace operator. Green's formula for PP gives a potential operator KK, built from EE, such that u=K(γu)u = K(\gamma u) in Ω\Omega whenever Pu=0Pu = 0 in Ω\Omega. Let γ+\gamma_+ take the Cauchy data of a function on Ω\Omega as limits from inside. The Calderón projector of PP and Ω\Omega is the operator C=γ+KC = \gamma_+ K on 2m2m-tuples of functions on Γ\Gamma.

Remarks

CC is a 2m×2m2m \times 2m matrix of pseudo-differential operators on Γ\Gamma, C2=CC^2 = C, and its range is the space of Cauchy data γu\gamma u of the solutions of Pu=0Pu = 0 in Ω\Omega. If EE is only a parametrix, then CC is a projection up to smoothing operators, which is enough for most uses. Example: for P=−ΔP = -\Delta (m=1m = 1), CC acts on pairs (f,g)(f, g). Its four entries are, up to signs and the factor 12I\tfrac12 I, the double layer, single layer, hypersingular and adjoint double layer operators. A pair (f,g)(f, g) is fixed by CC exactly when f=u∣Γf = u|_\Gamma and g=∂νu∣Γg = \partial_\nu u|_\Gamma for a harmonic function uu on Ω\Omega. Non-example: the identity on pairs (f,g)(f, g) is a projection, but its range is too large. On the unit disk it contains (0,1)(0, 1), which is not Cauchy data of a harmonic uu, since u=0u = 0 on the circle forces u=0u = 0.
