Linearity of the derivative
Builds on Fréchet derivative
Statement
Let and be normed vector spaces over , let be open, let , let , and let . Suppose that and are Fréchet differentiable at , with Fréchet derivatives and . Then and are Fréchet differentiable at , and
Remarks
The proof adds the two remainders: a sum of two terms that are is again . So the maps that are differentiable at form a vector space, and is a linear map on it. The same rules hold for the partial derivatives and for the directional derivatives.
