Product rule in several variables
Builds on Differentiable function of several variablesFréchet derivative
Statement
Let be open, let , and let . Suppose that and are differentiable at . Then the product is differentiable at , and its derivative is That is, for each .
Remarks
In terms of the gradient, the rule reads . The same rule holds for each partial derivative: . More generally, let be a bounded bilinear map. If and are Fréchet differentiable at , then . This gives product rules for the dot product and the cross product.
