Strict differentiability
Builds on Fréchet derivativeDifferentiable function of several variables
Definition
Let be open, let , and let . The function is strictly differentiable at if there is a linear map such that
Remarks
If is strictly differentiable at , put : then is differentiable at and is its Fréchet derivative. The converse is false. The function for , , is differentiable at , but it is not strictly differentiable at because is not continuous at . A function of class on is strictly differentiable at each point of . The same definition works for maps between Banach spaces, with norms in place of Euclidean norms.
