Measure and integration The Lebesgue integral Lemma
Fatou's lemma
Builds on Integral of a non-negative functionLimit inferiorMonotone convergence theorem
Statement
Let be a measure space. Let be measurable functions. Then is measurable, and where is the limit inferior and the integrals are integrals of non-negative functions.
Remarks
Proof idea: let . The functions increase to , and for every . The monotone convergence theorem gives .
The inequality can be strict. For on with Lebesgue measure, pointwise but for all .
Non-negativity is needed. For on , the left side is and the right side is .

For a student
Fatou's lemma is the step between the monotone convergence theorem and the dominated convergence theorem. It is often used to show that a limit function is integrable: if for all , then . It also shows that the norm is lower semicontinuous under pointwise convergence almost everywhere.
