Saddle point
Builds on Local maximum and minimumGradientDifferentiable function of several variables
Definition
Let be open, and let be differentiable at . The point is a saddle point of if and is not a local extremum of .
Remarks
Equivalently, and each ball around contains points and with . The origin is a saddle point of . Along the -axis has a minimum at , and along the -axis it has a maximum. If is of class and the Hessian matrix at a critical point is indefinite, the point is a saddle point. This condition is not necessary: has a saddle point at with zero Hessian. In one variable, a saddle point is a stationary point that is not an extremum, such as for .
