Local maximum and minimum
Builds on Function of several variables
Definition
Let , let , and let . The function has a local maximum at if there is such that for all with . The function has a local minimum at if there is such that for all with . A local extremum of is a local maximum or a local minimum of . The extremum is strict if the inequality is strict for all such .
Remarks
A global maximum of is a point with for all . Each global maximum is a local maximum. The function has a strict local minimum at , which is also a global minimum. In two or more variables, a local minimum that is the only critical point need not be a global minimum. For , the only critical point is a local minimum, but . At an interior local extremum of a differentiable function, the gradient is zero.
