Cross-validation
Builds on Loss functionEstimator
Definition
Let be data, and let a fitting rule map any subset of the data to a prediction function . Let be a loss function. Let be an integer with , and let be a partition of into nonempty folds. For each , let be the prediction function fitted on the data with indices outside . The -fold cross-validation estimate of the prediction error is
Remarks
The case , with one observation per fold, is leave-one-out cross-validation. To choose a tuning parameter, one computes for each candidate value and keeps a value with the smallest . Example: for least squares with , leave-one-out has a closed form. It equals , where is the full fit and the -th diagonal entry of the hat matrix. Non-example: the training error with fitted on all data is not cross-validation. Each is predicted by a function that used it, so the error is biased downwards.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
