Definition
Let be a parametric family of densities with an open interval, regular enough for the Cramér–Rao bound to hold. Let be the data, and let be the Fisher information of , assumed finite and positive. Let be an unbiased estimator of (its bias is ) with finite positive variance.
- The efficiency of at is .
- is efficient if for every .
- For two unbiased estimators of , the relative efficiency of with respect to is .
Remarks
By the Cramér–Rao bound, .
Example: for i.i.d. with known, and the sample mean has variance , so and is efficient.
Non-example: in the same model, is unbiased with variance , so , and is not efficient when .
The asymptotic relative efficiency compares two estimators with by the ratio . For normal data, the asymptotic relative efficiency of the sample median with respect to the sample mean is .
