Probability theory and stochastic processes Theorem
Cauchy–Schwarz inequality for expectations
Builds on Expected valueCovariance
Statement
Let and be real random variables on one probability space with and . Then is integrable and Equality holds if and only if almost surely for some reals and , not both .
Remarks
Proof: for each real , . A quadratic polynomial in that is never negative has a discriminant that is not positive. This is the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality for the inner product on the space of square-integrable random variables. Applied to and , it gives . So the correlation coefficient is in .
