Kruskal–Wallis test
Builds on Statistical hypothesis testIndependent and identically distributed random variablesChi-squared distributionConvergence in distribution
Definition
Let , and for let be i.i.d. real random variables with a continuous distribution function , the samples being independent. Let . Rank all observations together from to , let be the sum of the ranks in sample , and let . The Kruskal–Wallis statistic is The Kruskal–Wallis test of rejects when is large.
Remarks
Under the law of depends only on . As all , converges in distribution to the chi-squared distribution with degrees of freedom, which gives approximate critical values. The number is the mean of the ranks .
Example: , samples and , so , , . Then . The first form gives the same: .
Non-example: repeated measurements on the same subjects under conditions are not independent samples. The clause on independence fails; the Friedman test is used for such blocked data.
