Sample mean and sample covariance
Builds on Sample meanSample varianceCovariance matrixStatistic
Definition
Let and , and let be random vectors in , written as columns. The sample mean is the statistic The sample covariance matrix is the matrix Its entry is the sample covariance of the -th and the -th coordinates.
Remarks
Example: for the observations and , the mean is and the deviations are and . Each deviation gives the matrix with all entries , so has all four entries equal to . For , is the sample mean and is the sample variance. If the are i.i.d. with mean vector and finite covariance matrix , then and . Non-example: the matrix with divisor in place of is also used, but it is not unbiased; its expectation is . The matrix is symmetric and positive semidefinite, and it is singular when .
