Definition

Let TT be an estimator that maps each sample x=(x1,…,xn)x = (x_1, \dots, x_n) of points in ℝp\R^p to a value T(x)∈ℝkT(x) \in \R^k. For 0≤m≤n0 \le m \le n, let 𝒴m(x)\mathcal{Y}_m(x) be the set of samples obtained from xx by replacing at most mm points by arbitrary points of ℝp\R^p. The finite-sample breakdown point of TT at xx is εn∗(T,x)=min⁡{mn  :  sup⁡y∈𝒴m(x)∥T(y)−T(x)∥=∞}.\varepsilon^*_n(T, x) = \min\Big\{ \frac{m}{n} \;:\; \sup_{y \in \mathcal{Y}_m(x)} \norm{T(y) - T(x)} = \infty \Big\}. The asymptotic breakdown point is the limit of εn∗\varepsilon^*_n as n→∞n \to \infty, when it exists.

Remarks

Example: the sample median of real data has εn∗=⌊(n+1)/2⌋/n\varepsilon^*_n = \floor{(n+1)/2}/n. For n=2k+1n = 2k + 1, changing kk points leaves an original point at the middle position, between original values; changing k+1k + 1 points to a huge value MM makes the median MM. So the asymptotic breakdown point of the median is 1/21/2.

Non-example of robustness: the sample mean has εn∗=1/n\varepsilon^*_n = 1/n, since replacing one point x1x_1 by x1+nMx_1 + nM moves the mean by MM. Its asymptotic breakdown point is 00.

The kk-trimmed mean, which drops the kk smallest and kk largest values, has εn∗=(k+1)/n\varepsilon^*_n = (k+1)/n. For estimators of location that are translation equivariant, the asymptotic breakdown point is at most 1/21/2.
