Minimum-variance unbiased estimator
Builds on EstimatorBias of an estimatorVarianceBernoulli distribution
Definition
Let be a family of distributions of the data , and let be the quantity to estimate. An estimator is unbiased for if for every , that is, its bias is zero. Let be an unbiased estimator of with for all . It is a minimum-variance unbiased estimator, or uniformly minimum-variance unbiased estimator (UMVUE), if for every unbiased estimator of and every .
Remarks
Here is the variance when .
Example: let be i.i.d. Bernoulli() with . The proportion is unbiased with variance . The Fisher information of the sample is , so the Cramér–Rao bound for unbiased estimators of is . The estimator attains it at every , so is the UMVUE of .
Non-example: for , is unbiased, but its variance exceeds for every , so it fails the variance inequality.
The UMVUE need not exist, and an estimator that attains the Cramér–Rao bound need not exist even when the UMVUE does. If is a complete sufficient statistic and is unbiased, then is the UMVUE; this is the Lehmann–Scheffé theorem.
