Identifiability
Builds on Statistical modelInjective function
Definition
Let be a statistical model indexed by a parameter space . The model is identifiable if the map from to the set of probability measures is injective. That is, for all , if , then .
Remarks
Example: the normal model with and is identifiable, because the mean and the variance of the law recover and . Non-example: let with . Then while , so the model is not identifiable. A function is identifiable when implies ; in the non-example, is identifiable.
