Ancillary statistic
Builds on Statistical modelStatistic
Definition
Let be a statistical model and let be a statistic with values in a measurable space . The statistic is ancillary if its distribution does not depend on : for every , the probability is the same for all .
Remarks
Example: let be i.i.d. with and . Then are i.i.d. , and the sample variance is a function of them alone, because ; so is ancillary for . Non-example: in the same model, , whose law changes with , so is not ancillary. In a location model with a fixed law of the , every function of the differences is ancillary. In a scale model , every function of the ratios is ancillary, when these are defined.
