Index of a subgroup

Builds on Left coset

Definition

Let GG be a group and let HH be a subgroup of GG. The index of HH in GG, written [G:H][G : H] or ∣G:H∣|G : H|, is the cardinality of the set of left cosets of HH in GG.

Remarks

The index is also the number of right cosets, because gH↦Hg−1gH \mapsto Hg^{-1} is a bijection between the two sets of cosets. In (ℤ,+)(\mathbb{Z}, +), the subgroup nℤn\mathbb{Z} has index nn for each positive integer nn. A subgroup of a finite group has index ∣G∣/∣H∣|G| / |H|, but an infinite group can have a subgroup of finite index, for example 2ℤ2\mathbb{Z} in ℤ\mathbb{Z}.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
