Subgroups of index two are normal
Builds on Normality via left and right cosetsIndex of a subgroup
Remarks
For , the left cosets are and , and the right cosets are and . Thus for each , and the coset criterion applies. For example, the alternating group has index in the symmetric group , and thus it is normal.

For a student
A subgroup is normal when for each . In general this is a real condition. For a subgroup of index it is automatic.
The reason is that two cosets leave no choice:
- The left cosets are and one other coset. Since the cosets partition , the other coset is .
- In the same way, the right cosets are and .
- If , then .
- If , then .
A worked example with and :
- and , so the index is .
- For , the left coset is the set of the three transpositions.
- The right coset is the same set. Thus .
The index two condition is sharp. The subgroup of has index , and it is not normal: , but .
Standard examples are in , the rotations in a dihedral group, and in . A related fact is that a subgroup whose index is the smallest prime divisor of is also normal. The proof of that fact needs a group action.
