Sylow p-subgroup

Builds on P-groupSubgroup

Definition

Let GG be a finite group and let pp be a prime number. Write ∣G∣=pnm|G| = p^n m with n≥0n \geq 0 and p∤mp \nmid m. A Sylow pp-subgroup of GG is a subgroup of GG of order pnp^n. The set of the Sylow pp-subgroups of GG is written Syl⁡p(G)\operatorname{Syl}_p(G), and its size is written npn_p.

Remarks

A Sylow pp-subgroup is a maximal p-subgroup of GG. If pp does not divide ∣G∣|G|, then the only Sylow pp-subgroup is {e}\{e\}. In S3S_3, the Sylow 33-subgroup is A3A_3, and there are three Sylow 22-subgroups, each of order 22.
