Laws of exponents in a group

Builds on Group

Statement

Let GG be a group with identity element ee, and let a∈Ga \in G. For an integer nn, define ana^n as follows: a0=ea^0 = e, an+1=anaa^{n+1} = a^n a for n≥0n \geq 0, and a−n=(a−1)na^{-n} = (a^{-1})^n for n>0n > 0. Then am+n=amana^{m+n} = a^m a^n and (am)n=amn(a^m)^n = a^{mn} for all integers mm and nn.

Remarks

The law (ab)n=anbn(ab)^n = a^n b^n is true for all nn when ab=baab = ba, but it can fail when aa and bb do not commute. In additive notation the laws are (m+n)a=ma+na(m + n)a = ma + na and n(ma)=(nm)an(ma) = (nm)a. The first law shows that n↦ann \mapsto a^n is a group homomorphism from (ℤ,+)(\mathbb{Z}, +) to GG.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
