Cyclic group

Builds on Cyclic subgroup generated by an element

Definition

A group GG is cyclic when there is an element g∈Gg \in G with G=⟨g⟩G = \langle g \rangle, where ⟨g⟩\langle g \rangle is the cyclic subgroup generated by gg. Such an element gg is called a generator of GG.

Remarks

The group (ℤ,+)(\mathbb{Z}, +) is cyclic, and its generators are 11 and −1-1. The integers modulo nn under addition form a cyclic group of order nn, generated by 11. A cyclic group can have many generators: in the integers modulo nn, the generators are the residues coprime to nn. The circle group is not cyclic, because it is uncountable.
