Cyclic groups are abelian
Builds on Cyclic groupLaws of exponents in a groupAbelian group
Statement
Let be a cyclic group. Then is abelian.
Remarks
If generates , then any two elements are and for integers , and by the laws of exponents. The converse is false: the Klein four-group is abelian but not cyclic. The group is abelian but not cyclic.
Going deeper
For a student
A cyclic group is generated by one element . Each element is a power for some integer . The result says that such a group is abelian.
The reason is that powers of one element add their exponents:
- Let and .
- By the laws of exponents, and .
- Addition of integers is commutative, so .
A worked example in under addition, with generator :
- Write and .
- Then and are both seven copies of .
- Seven copies of give . Thus .
The converse is false. The Klein four-group is abelian, but each element other than has order . Thus no element generates the four elements, and is not cyclic. The group is another abelian group that is not cyclic.
A useful consequence is a test for groups that are not cyclic. If a group is not abelian, then it is not cyclic. For example, is not abelian, so it is not cyclic.
Each subgroup of a cyclic group is also cyclic. This fact needs a different proof, by division with remainder.
