Group theory and generalizations Proposition
Order of a cyclic subgroup equals the order of its generator
Builds on Cyclic subgroup generated by an elementOrder of an elementOrder of a groupg to the n equals 1 iff the order divides n
Statement
Let be a group and let . If has finite order , then , these elements are distinct, and thus . If has infinite order, then the powers for are distinct, and is infinite.
Remarks
Here is the cyclic subgroup generated by , and is its order. The proof uses the divisibility criterion for powers: exactly when divides . With Lagrange's theorem, this fact shows that the order of an element of a finite group divides the order of the group.
