Group theory and generalizations Proposition

g to the n equals 1 iff the order divides n

Builds on Order of an elementLaws of exponents in a group

Statement

Let GG be a group with identity element ee, and let g∈Gg \in G be an element of finite order mm. Let nn be an integer. Then gn=eg^n = e if and only if mm divides nn.

Remarks

The proof divides nn by mm with remainder: n=qm+rn = qm + r with 0≤r<m0 \leq r < m, so that gn=(gm)qgr=grg^n = (g^m)^q g^r = g^r. By the minimality of mm, the power grg^r is ee only when r=0r = 0. A consequence is that ga=gbg^a = g^b if and only if a≡b(modm)a \equiv b \pmod m.
