Group theory and generalizations Theorem

Subgroups of cyclic groups are cyclic

Builds on Cyclic groupSubgroup

Statement

Let GG be a cyclic group and let HH be a subgroup of GG. Then HH is cyclic.

Remarks

Let gg generate GG. If H≠{e}H \neq \{e\}, let mm be the smallest positive integer with gm∈Hg^m \in H; then division with remainder shows that H=⟨gm⟩H = \langle g^m \rangle. For example, each subgroup of (ℤ,+)(\mathbb{Z}, +) has the form mℤm\mathbb{Z}, generated by mm.

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
