Torsion subgroup
Builds on Abelian groupSubgroupOrder of an elementQuotient group
Definition
Let be an abelian group. The torsion subgroup of is . The group is a torsion group when , and it is torsion-free when .
Remarks
The set is a subgroup because is commutative: if and , then . In a nonabelian group, the elements of finite order need not form a subgroup. In , the product has infinite order. The quotient group is torsion-free, and is a characteristic subgroup of . For , each element has finite order, so , but the orders have no upper bound.
