Jordan algebra
Builds on FieldVector spaceNonassociative ring
Definition
Let be a field of characteristic different from . A Jordan algebra over is a vector space over with a bilinear product , , such that for all :
- ;
- .
Clause 2 is the Jordan identity. The product need not be associative, so is a nonassociative ring with an -vector space structure.
Remarks
Example: for an associative -algebra , put . Clause 1 is clear, and clause 2 follows by expanding: with in , one has , and both and equal . The resulting Jordan algebra is written ; the Hermitian complex matrices form a real Jordan subalgebra of . Non-example: with the cross product satisfies clause 2, since makes both sides , but fails clause 1, because . A Jordan algebra is power-associative: the powers of a single element do not depend on the bracketing.
