Definition
Let be a field and let be a separable closure of . Kummer–Artin–Schreier–Witt theory is the description of the finite abelian extensions of inside of exponent dividing a given integer. It has two parts.
The Kummer part is Kummer theory. It applies to an integer not divisible by the characteristic of , when contains distinct -th roots of unity. It describes the abelian extensions of exponent dividing by adjoining -th roots.
The Artin–Schreier–Witt part concerns a field of characteristic and an integer . Let be the ring of Witt vectors of length . Its elements are sequences in , with the first Witt sum and product polynomials as operations. Let be the Frobenius endomorphism of , and let , an additive homomorphism. For a group with , let be the field generated over by the entries of all with . The theory states:
- the map is surjective, and its kernel is ;
- the map is a bijection from the groups as above with finite onto a set of extensions. This set consists of the finite abelian extensions of inside whose Galois group has exponent dividing ;
- for such , the pairing , with , is well defined and perfect, so .
Remarks
For , and , so the Artin–Schreier–Witt part is Artin–Schreier theory. The cyclic extensions of degree correspond to the groups generated by and one whose class has order .
Example: take and . Here is the identity on , because for , so . Thus is cyclic of order . By clauses 2 and 3, has exactly one extension in with Galois group of exponent dividing and of degree , and it is cyclic: it is .
Non-example: the Kummer part needs the roots of unity in the base field. Over with , the field is not Galois over , since its other conjugates , with a primitive cube root of unity, are not real. So adjoining -th roots does not give abelian extensions when lacks the -th roots of unity.
